EXPLORE THE KNIFE STUDIES
I. THE KNIFE
Japanese-inspired kitchen knives demand clarity of form. The blade's geometry and the handle's proportion must work as one.
Mokurei studies kitchen knives with Japanese profiles — including Bunka and Kiritsuke forms — and develops individually finished wooden handles around each composition. These are Japanese-inspired designs; the studio does not represent them as knives manufactured in Japan.
The work is based in Switzerland, with special attention to exceptional woods, contrasting heartwood and sapwood, and the restrained use of inlays and metal spacers.

II. THE HANDLE
Dark ebony, richly figured walnut, contrasting sapwood, burls and other distinct timbers are chosen for visual character and suitability. No two pieces of wood have exactly the same grain.
Japanese-style wooden knife handles are considered in relation to blade profile, visual balance and grip. The geometry is kept quiet so that the natural timber remains the focal point.
Selected compositions incorporate contrasting woods, subtle inlays and brass accents. Not every knife uses the same materials or details; each object is presented individually.
III. THE STUDIO
If you're looking for Japanese-inspired kitchen knives or distinctive wooden wa handles in Switzerland, explore the finished Mokurei studies and the studio's botanical material archive. The archive documents the properties and visual character of wood species; it is not a live inventory of available handles.
For currently available knives, specifications, photographs or a question about an individual handle, please contact the studio directly. Blade construction and availability are confirmed for each piece rather than assumed from a generic catalogue.
