Original photograph © Mokurei Studio · timber held in the studio collection. Identification supplied by the studio; physical-property values are literature references, not measurements of the pictured piece.
Material character
One of the very dense decorative timbers; striking mottling is prized, though heavily figured sections are not common.
Notable applications
Violin-bow frogs, luxury pens, precision-turned details and small inlays.
Of particular interest
Its name comes directly from the characteristic pattern of spotted scales, not from the tree's shape.
Workshop note
Small pieces can be susceptible to checking during drying; careful material selection matters.
Wood identification is provided by the Mokurei Studio collection, not independently laboratory-verified. Technical figures are reference averages, not measurements of the photographed piece; they vary with provenance and moisture.
