Original photograph © Mokurei Studio · timber held in the studio collection. Identification supplied by the studio; physical-property values are literature references, not measurements of the pictured piece.
Material character
Dense, fine-textured and naturally dark, with a dramatic pale sapwood contrast when the boundary is retained.
Notable applications
Piano keys, musical-instrument fittings, fine inlay and turned objects.
Of particular interest
Ebony is not a single botanical species. The most recognisable deep-black commercial ebonies belong to the genus Diospyros.
Workshop note
Heartwood and sapwood can differ strikingly. Traceable provenance is especially important with scarce tropical timbers.
Wood identification is provided by the Mokurei Studio collection, not independently laboratory-verified. Technical figures are reference averages, not measurements of the photographed piece; they vary with provenance and moisture.
